Tenerife Beaches

The volcanic nature of the island of Tenerife indicates that it has few natural beaches. Those that exist are characterized by black sands from the island's volcanic rock foundations. The demand for tourist sun-bathing space, however, has led to the creation of resorts and man-made beaches, with golden sand having been imported in some areas.

The South of Tenerife is usually preferred by the tourists to spend their vacations. One of the main reasons that contribute to this choice is because the south offers more hours of sun than the north.

Arona is a city localized at the south of the island, in the province of Santa Cruz of Tenerife. It is one of the biggest tourism centres of the island, with 2 millions tourists. It is divided in 4 zones: Playa de las Américas, Cristianos, Galletas y Costa del Silencio.

On the other hand, Adeje is also part of the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, located at southwest part of the island.

The principals activities in this area are linked to Playa de las Américas and the Adeje Coast.

Playa de las Américas

This sprawling resort is situated on the south west coast of Tenerife between the cities of Arona and Adeje, and is packed with high-rise hotels, apartment blocks and tourists. Sun, sand and sangria are all here! There is a vast choice of bars and restaurants and some of the best nightlife in the Canary Islands as well. Playa de las Américas is the most famous tourist area, the pulsating heart of Tenerife.

Tenerife Beaches - Las Americas

You will find plenty of small lovely beaches, protected by long breakwaters to stop the man-made sand banks from being washed away. An area with a large number of tourists, always count on meeting a considerable crowd on the beaches. All beaches are just a footstep away from each other and all kinds of water sports are available. This famous black beach and nightlife is a tourist Mecca, especially to northern Europeans and youngsters.

Playa de Los Cristianos

Firstly has the original beach in the port and secondly the Playa de las Vistas joining Los Cristianos and Las Americas. Popular for its soft yellow expanse, those looking for a quieter resort can stay here. Only forty five minutes transfer from Reina Sofia Airport. The artificial beaches are very nice and it has a wonderful harbor that offers fishing trips, pleasure cruises, glass bottom boats, diving excursions and ferries to La Gomera.

Tenerife Beaches - Los Cristianos

Los Cristianos tends to attract a slightly older destination, but it has managed to keep a little of its original architecture and atmosphere as a quaint fishing village. Year-round sunshine and a vast array of pubs, clubs, shops and restaurants are here. The nearby AquaPark Octopus is also a must for any family. Tenerife Zoo and the Eagles Park are also within easy reach of Los Cristianos.

Since the 60's this beach it has been famous and it has received lots of tourists that choose the south of Tenerife to spend their holidays. This beach with gold sand is protected by the port which contributes to its calm waters.

Playa de las Teresitas

Besides being an artificial beach, it is the most famous in the city of Santa Cruz, only 7 km from de city centre. It is located in the north and it was extended in 1973 by bringing in golden sand from the Sahara desert and palm trees for shade that converted it in a very popular beach. In this beach you can enjoy the tranquillity that characterize this beach but if you want some activity you can participate in the classes of aerobic or play a volleyball match.

Tenerife Beaches - Las Teresitas

After the exercise you can rest in the bars and restaurants or in the shadow of the exotic palms that beatify the beach.A small beach resort, it is perfect for families with children, this is one of the best reasons why people from San Andrés and Santa Cruz de Tenerife spend their time at Las Teresitas.

Playa de Los Gigantes

Known as Playa de los Guios this beach is located at the west coast of Tenerife, it is good for sunbathing and it has soft sands. Although it is small for the size of the town, it is very lovely when one looks at the surrounding incredible landscape. Named after the imposing cliffs - the giants - , you can see these cliffs up close by getting a boat, which are for hire from the marina.With black sand, this beach is situated in one of the shiniest places of Tenerife, so you should not forget protection for the sun.Here you can rent pedal boats and all the things to help you having a comfortable day in the beach.

Playa de las Galletas

This beach is located in the south of Arona, at the island's southern extreme. One of the main characteristics of this beach is the great hotels that exists over there and also the sports installations. It is mostly stony, with one small, sandy black beach and very calm.To enjoy this beach as much as you can here you will have the opportunity to do scuba diving and enjoy the colours of the Atlantic Ocean. This village is mostly known because it is a fishing village; because of this they have really good restaurants that offer you fresh fish.

Fanabe

Located at the south, this beach is perfect for sunbathing, with its soft and yellow sand, showers and other facilities. It is intended to attract the upscale tourist clientele to the island.

It is considered to be one of the best beaches in Tenerife for its clean sand and water and also for the services that this beach offers you.

Torviscas

It is an expansive, golden sandy beach with its marina, beach bars, voleyball and water sports available. It is situated just below the Torviscas market place, with great views of the island of La Gomera in the distance. After soaking up the sun, you can head to the Moonlight Bar and watch the beautiful sunset over La Gomera. Located at the Adeje town, in the south of Tenerife this is the perfect beach to go with family and relax in the calm waters. Here you can find a lot of restaurants, bars and cafes.

Playa del Roque

Another wonderful beach of black sand with clean waters. This beach has the particularity that you have to go by boat to can arrive at it.The waters deserve caution from the tourists because it has a lot of currents that are perfect for the practise of surfing but they can be dangerous for the ones that are not prepared.

Puerto de la Cruz

It is an old fishing port and it is one of Spain's major attractions. Remarkably remaining unscathed, you will find here bars and restaurant, shops and even a casino! One of its charms is its traditional Canarian style homes and, of course, the beaches with fine black shingle. Playa Jardín is good and child friendly. It is divided into three different stretches of beach, the one with the finest sand is Playa de Punta Brava, and the others are Playa del Vastillo and Playa del Charcon.

Lago Martiánez

Although not strictly a beach, the sheer size and beauty of this multi-pool complex is also an attraction. Located at the Puerto de la Cruz, the Lago Martiánez is an artificial lake constructed with volcanic sand, in 1977, with 10.000 m2. But, besides being a lake it offers to the tourists much more infrastructures than an artificial lake can offer.

Playa El Médano

It is a small coastal resort, in the south of Tenerife, only 7km from Sur Reina Airport and 20km from the main southern resorts, Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos. A lovely long natural beach, with white sand. It is one of the biggest natural beaches with 2km of longitude and its windy characteristics make this beach one of the best to the practise of windusurd or kitesurf.
