Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the place to be for serious shopping in Tenerife. Visitors will do very well to avoid the tourist traps of the southern towns and do all their souvenir shopping here.

The Canary Islands are, for the most part, partly tax-free, meaning there are no customs duties and value-added tax for most items bought. This means that prices on items are generally lower than in other countries in Europe. With a little work, great deals can be found everywhere. Tenerife is known for its wonderful local crafts. For starters, beautiful embroidery, thread-, and lace-work are all hallmarks of the natives of Tenerife.

These take long to make and are exceptionally beautiful. The islands also are known for traditional pottery and wickerwork. All these crafts can be purchased in various shops in town and would make lovely souvenirs to take home.
