The first part of the name means Saint Jacob in Spanish it is a municipality in the southwestern part of the Tenerife located NW of Los Cristianos and Las Américas of Arona and about 30 km NW of the international airport.
The population is at 10,523 as of 2003 and its population density is at 201.55/km². It also occupies an area of 52.21 km² and its elevation is at 925 m. Santiago del Teide is linked north of the superhighway which passes through the municipal seat.
Farmlands are in the valley areas to the west and east while forests and grasslands are situated to the east. The mountains cover the north forming a zig-zag on the highway to the northern part of the island and the east.
Business, tourism and agriculture pre-dominate its economy until the 1990s when agriculture became the leading industry in Santiago del Teide with rural folks forming majority of the population.
