San Cristóbal de La Laguna, or La Laguna for short, is a municipality in the northern edge of Tenerife , the largest of the Canary Islands off the coast of Africa. La Laguna is Spanish for The Lagoon. La Laguna's economy is mainly commercial in nature, with agricultural areas occupying the northeastern part of the city.
The city was founded some time between 1496 and 1497 by Alonso Fernandez de Lugo. It served as Tenerife 's capital for a time, until the capital was moved to Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1723. La Laguna was declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO in 1999 and is the island's second largest city.
